WELCOME TO THE AMOPS STUDENT MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
PART 1: FIND YOUR MENTOR: RESIDENT/ATTENDING MENTORSHIP FOR STUDENTS:
The path to becoming a physician is long and difficult. Thoughtful guidance can make a real difference. Student members of AMOPS that request mentors will be paired with either a resident or attending mentor in their region. Our hope is that through this experience students can gain insight into the profession, get their questions answered and have a contact from whom they can seek advice, which may help with the student’s decision making process.
Resident or attending mentors are invaluable as they have insight into the profession—how it is practiced, how it is changing and the process by which one gains entry into residency. They also were once medical students in a similar situation so they will be able to relate to where a student is in his or her training.
PART 2: LISTEN, LEARN, ASK QUESTIONS AND STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE:
Once matched with a mentor, our hope is that you can develop a meaningful professional relationship. While we ask all mentors to reply to your questions and inquiries in a reasonable time frame, please keep in mind that residents and attendings have very demanding schedules so we request your patience with turnaround time for emails and phone calls.
Some suggested topics of conversation:
- What do you find to be most rewarding about being a military physician?
- What do you find to be the most challenging part?
- What kind of mix do you have between in-patient and out-patient practice?
- Is there a particular area of the military that you enjoy more than others?
- Some questions specific to residency:
- What programs did you apply to?
- What did you find to be important when considering a residency program?
- What was your experience with taking the boards?
- What can I expect from my residency training?
PART 3: APPLY USING OUR SIMPLE APPLICATION PROCESS BELOW
On behalf of the SAMOPS organization, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to show interest in the SAMOPS Mentorship Program. Your dedication to being a life-long learner will pay-off and soon you will be able to maneuver and prepare yourself for the road ahead.
As you are aware, the path to becoming a military physician is long and difficult. The purpose of the SAMOPS Mentorship Program is to give students an opportunity to ask an AMOPS physician first-hand questions about military rotations, residencies, specialties, etc. The program is designed to “match” an AMOPS Physician with a SAMOPS student. Once matched with a mentor, our hope is that students can develop a meaningful, professional relationship. Through this experience, students can gain insight into the profession and seek advice, which may help in decision-making processes.
Below is a link to register with the SAMOPS Mentorship Program. The information you input will be available to the SAMOPS Board. Upon match-time, you will receive an email confirming your match along with the contact information of your matched AMOPS Physician.
